Treasures in Jars of Clay with Lisa Samson
The summer conference was one of our hottest ever. We had record attendance, lovely surroundings, good food. Plus, we had more editors and agents than ever before, excellent coaches and workshop presenters, inspirational keynoters, and outstanding times for worship, networking, and friendships. We also had record temperatures, reaching at times over 106 degrees. It all came together for four exceptional days at Canby Grove Conference Center, July 27–31.

Does the writing and publishing process ever make you grit your teeth and growl? Or cry? Or pray? I admit I have done these and more as I struggle to grow and produce as a writer.
Professional writers master the craft of writing. For the workshop I taught at our 2009 spring conference, I coined the term WRRS. This is an acronym for what the writing process entails as we seek to write for publication. It may be common advice, but it’s helpful to recall the basics from time to time. They are:

Northwest Christian University in Eugene hosted OCW’s spring conference, where keynoter Cindy Martinusen Coloma shared her journey to publication. Her candid yet entertaining style moved the audience through laughter and tears to encouragement. Unassuming, she said it’s still hard to believe when she hears herself answer, “I’m a writer,” when asked the question, “What do you do?” Well, I purchased her most recent book from OCW’s conference book table and set about reading it as soon as I returned home. Her intricate weaving of people and situations kept me reading every free moment. She is definitely a writer.
After Cindy’s sessions, President Mary Hake conducted the business meeting. Treasurer Billie Reynolds announced OCW’s total balance as $36,784, most of which was seed money for the summer conference. About $12,000 of that amount came from summer conference registrations.
Mary reported that the Nominating Committee had one qualified candidate for program coordinator; however, nominations are still open. Since that time, the candidate withdrew, but Marilyn Rhoads has accepted the nomination to run for the office of program coordinator. The election will be held at the fall business meeting.
The health of OCW is evidenced by its growth—almost 450 members today. We are blessed that our growing pains have been minimal and actually positive in many respects.

Most days, I don’t miss the corporate world that earned me my stripes. I’ve owned my own business, working at home, for about 11 years now. I still remember stocking runs and coffee runs, office politics and 5 a.m. Friday meetings—yes, 5 a.m. “productivity” meetings.
But when I think back to that life, I realize there is something I miss: people.
