Writer's Prayer - September 2010

Holy Father God, we come to You in the name of Jesus, our Shepherd King.

We love to pray, “The Lord is my shepherd …” (Psalm 23:1). Speaking those words fills us with awe and bows us low before Your throne. We are stunned that You, Omnipotent, Omniscient Lord of all Galaxies, would set aside Your glory with Father and step down from Your majesty into the cesspool of our lives. You laid aside Your powerful scepter of authority and chose a shepherd’s rod and servant’s staff to rescue us. You searched until You found us, filthy and broken, then You gathered us into Your arms and hugged us close, whispering endearments, until Your love made us whole. We are ever grateful, Lord. Thank You.

Program Coordinator Candidate Announced

We are pleased that Marilyn Rhoads has agreed to be a candidate for the office of program coordinator. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a BA in English and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction. Marilyn became a certified reading specialist and taught in Salem and Eugene Public Schools. Books and Things Bookstore, which she owned, featured monthly events showcasing local authors. She has served as Women’s Ministries Director and Special Events Coordinator for her church. Marilyn proofread for Harvest House and was an editor, published a nonfiction book, and wrote grants for organizations. She and Jim, her husband of 34 years, have two adult daughters. Marilyn joined OCW in 2008 and has completed her first historical romance novel.

Growth Spawns Need for Manager

Your OCW board has determined the most efficient way to handle all of the business dealings required of our organization is to appoint a business manager. The new position will encompass all of the duties of the current membership secretary position—and so much more.
At our accountant’s recommendation, the business manager will handle all bank deposits, while the treasurer continues to disburse all funds. In the business world, it is considered “best practice” to have one person handling the incoming money and another handling the outflow.

Here is a sampling of other responsibilities of this new position:

  • Coordinate the signing of all contracts on behalf of the corporation
  • Work with and/or serve as OCW facility liaison at all venues
  •  Act as registrar for all one-day conferences and work with (or as) registrar for the summer conference
  •  Oversee counting of money at all events with the assistance of at least one other person
  •  Be a designated signer on all bank accounts but exercise that power only with the approval of the president and/or treasurer, the other two signers on the account
  •  Maintain membership database and mailing list from which to send mass e-mails at the direction of the president and/or summer conference director, and for mailing the newsletter
  • This will be an appointed position subject to annual review and approval by the board. If approved by OCW members at the fall meeting, the business manager will be a voting member of the board and will be paid a modest amount monthly since the position encompasses so many responsibilities and requires a significant time commitment.
