Writer's Prayer - September 2010

Holy Father God, we come to You in the name of Jesus, our Shepherd King.

We love to pray, “The Lord is my shepherd …” (Psalm 23:1). Speaking those words fills us with awe and bows us low before Your throne. We are stunned that You, Omnipotent, Omniscient Lord of all Galaxies, would set aside Your glory with Father and step down from Your majesty into the cesspool of our lives. You laid aside Your powerful scepter of authority and chose a shepherd’s rod and servant’s staff to rescue us. You searched until You found us, filthy and broken, then You gathered us into Your arms and hugged us close, whispering endearments, until Your love made us whole. We are ever grateful, Lord. Thank You.

Critique Groups Offer Writers Encouragement

Dawn Shipman, OCW Critique Group Coordinator

I hope you’re all having a great, productive writing summer. For those of you who were at the summer coaching conference, I hope you’re putting to use the many things you learned (I’m speaking to myself, as well). The summer conference is such a wonderful time to learn, regroup, refocus, make new friends, and be rejuvenated and encouraged in our writing endeavors. We hope to see you all next summer! Several people approached me during the conference about critique groups, and here is what I told them: We have a number of critique groups operating in Oregon and southwest Washington.

Unfortunately, we have more writers seeking groups than we have groups to take them in. I have a list of the groups and am happy to pass on the name and e-mail address of the group leader.

When people live “off the beaten path,” without local groups operating, we encourage folks to see if they can find one or two others who want to start a group. I am happy to connect people, if I’m aware of who’s looking for what (and where).

Here’s a short success story for those wary of starting a group. I had wanted to be in a critique group for some time when, about two years ago, I met another woman from Vancouver who was ready to write. We talked through some ideas and sent e-mails to others in the Vancouver area I’d heard of through OCW. Long story short: Our group has been meeting for over a year and a half and we’re having a great time, learning, writing, and growing—both as writers and people. Four of us made it to the summer conference, and one sold a couple of stories to one of the visiting editors!

Another short success story—a Tillamook woman contacted me last year, but ... off in Tillamook? What was the chance another OCW-inclined soul would be nearby? Well, what do I know, anyway? Turns out, another local woman wanted to write. The two met and have gathered regularly since. Both came to the summer conference, introduced themselves to me, and seemed to be having a great time. I love a happy ending!

Writers in the Albany/Lebanon area are itching to start a group. Any takers? Contact me, and I’ll get y’all together. - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
