Writer's Prayer - September 2010

Holy Father God, we come to You in the name of Jesus, our Shepherd King.

We love to pray, “The Lord is my shepherd …” (Psalm 23:1). Speaking those words fills us with awe and bows us low before Your throne. We are stunned that You, Omnipotent, Omniscient Lord of all Galaxies, would set aside Your glory with Father and step down from Your majesty into the cesspool of our lives. You laid aside Your powerful scepter of authority and chose a shepherd’s rod and servant’s staff to rescue us. You searched until You found us, filthy and broken, then You gathered us into Your arms and hugged us close, whispering endearments, until Your love made us whole. We are ever grateful, Lord. Thank You.

Juggling Act: Roles as Mom, Writer, OCW Member

Most days, I don’t miss the corporate world that earned me my stripes. I’ve owned my own business, working at home, for about 11 years now. I still remember stocking runs and coffee runs, office politics and 5 a.m. Friday meetings—yes, 5 a.m. “productivity” meetings.
But when I think back to that life, I realize there is something I miss: people.

Instead of colleagues and clients at my desk with questions, I have kids and cats—all of whom need attention. My schedule changes every single day. Some days, I’m on the clock at 5 a.m., off by 9 a.m. and onto my “other” (Mom) clock, then back on the office clock at 7 p.m.

Many of you have only “met” me through this column and the OCW Web site and occasional introductions at conferences. (My favorite “first-time” meeting with an OCW colleague was with my friend Jeff Gerke at the 2008 summer conference: “You’re the webmaster? No, it’s just I
didn’t think computer geeks knew how to dress.” I’m still waiting for an apology.)

I have met the most amazing people through OCW, from Angela Elwell Hunt, who signed the tattered, well-read copy of The Three Trees given to me when my oldest was born, to the exceptionally talented members of my critique group. I have found work and writing opportunities through fellow members, and have made invaluable connections.

But, as much as I love my job as OCW webmaster, the greater reward has been fellowship with my brothers and sisters in Christ through OCW. While we have similar writing and publishing goals, our ultimate goal is to finish the race described by the Apostle Paul—the race to heaven! We’re holding hands in both races, encouraging and loving one another in writing and in grace.

I treasure these friends, and I hope you do, too. The finish line is laid out for us in the parable of our Lord: “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matthew 25:21 niv). Let us run the race together!
