B. J. Bassett, Roseburg, had “Our Nightmare with Melanie” reprinted in the January/February 2010 issue of Signs of the Times, South Africa. This is the tenth time this personal experience article on anorexia nervosa and the power of prayer has been reprinted. It was originally published by Focus on the Family.

bolz_rs.pngRiverside, California’s Carolyn Bolz recently sold an article to Dystonia/ST, a neurological magazine. The editor e-mailed her within 10 minutes after she sent it, offering to purchase it. The article and her photo were to appear in the April issue. The editor asked if he could mention her age in the article, and she politely declined. Then, in an e-mail, he guessed her age at 23. “I got a real kick out of that editor’s e-mail message,” she said. “I just may have to frame it someday!”

Martha Cannon of Amity, who is beginning her voyage into the publishing world, is attending classes with a seasoned and published author, and is looking forward to one day qualifying as an author.

OakTara, a publishing house founded in 2006 by Jeff Nesbit and Ramona Tucker, announces the release of Like a Bird Wanders, a 252-page inspirational novel written by Sharon Bernash Smith and Linda Reinhardt, both of Vancouver, Washington, and Roseanne Croft of Redmond.

gaildenhamsmall.jpgGail Denham of Sunriver wrote a Poem a Day with Writer’s Digest prompts during November and continues to write one each Wednesday with prompts. She also plans to participate in Poetry Month in April, writing a poem each day. She encourages any poet/writer to become involved in a “prompt” situation, either with a friend or a Web site. “It helps to get the juices flowing and fill those empty white pages,” she said.

Birdie Etchison of Ocean Park, Washington, reports her first sale of a romance story, “A Man to Love,” to the weekly Woman’s World magazine. It was in the March 15 issue. .

Tom Fuller of Newberg and co-author Christy Van Heukelem signed a contract with Arcadia Publishing for an Images of America series book on Newberg, scheduled for publication in late fall. He previously co-authored and published Oregon at Work: 1859–2009 with Arcadia. He will again serve as OCW’s conference pastor for the summer coaching conference.

Victoria Hart, Vancouver, Washington, had a story in the recently published book,  A Cup of Comfort Book of Bible Promises. Her submission is called “The Musical.”

Nanci Huyser of Kilgore, Texas, had a personal experience story, “Without My Help,” included in the recently released A Cup of Comfort of Bible Promises (Stories That Celebrate God's Encouraging Words). After meeting with an editor at the OCW summer conference last year, she sold a personal experience story that will be published in 2011. In December 2008, Bouy Up Press (an imprint ofawoc.com) published a book she wrote for retired PRCA bull rider Terry Holland called What A Ride! And The Upper Room is holding “for further consideration” a devotional she submitted.

Messing, Portland, had a short fiction story, “Holiday Mocha,” published in the December 2009 issue of The Gem; a poem, “Worship Is,” and a true story, “A Heaven-Sent Ministry,” published in the March 28, 2010, and April 18, 2010, issues of Standard; and another true story, “Through a Child’s Eyes,” slated for publication in the December 2010 issue of Standard. She has a poem reprint entitled “Honor and Praises” that will be featured in Lydia E. Harris’ forthcoming book, Preparing My Heart for Grandparenting, and another short fiction story, “Dinner at Juanita’s,” slated for publication in the February 2011 issue of Evangel.

Jan Pierce of Vancouver, Washington, had three Christmas pieces accepted at The Gem. They are “The King Reigns” (about King Herod), “Motherhood” (about the mother of Mary), and “Making a Living” (about the wife of the innkeeper). She also wrote seven devotionals for the summer issue of Fruit of the Vine and seven for The Quiet Hour. In addition, she had two series of articles—“The Teacher in Me” and “Thoughts from Granny Pierce”—published online at Churchmouse Publications, and she continues writing monthly for Grannylook.com. 

pamrosales.jpgPamela Rosales, Aloha, had two poems, “Stones” and “Our Hope,” published this spring 2010 in LIVE. Her “ABC Book of Encouragement” will be in Clubhouse Jr. this year, and her poem, “Autumn Blaze,” received preliminary acceptance for inclusion in June Cotner’s anthology Earth Blessings.

Leila Rae Sommerfeld of Gresham, author of Beyond Our Control: Restructuring Your Life after Sexual Assault from Kregel, was featured in an article called “Undone: Rape in the U.S.” published in the March/April issue of Prism Magazine: America’s Alternative Evangelical Voice. She also teaches a five-week self-defense class for women on Wednesday nights in Gresham, and she has proposed a book on her women's self-defense and safety measures course. Donna Tallman of Portland had seven of her contributions published in a new book called Battlefields & Blessings: Stories of Faith and Courage from the War in Iraq and Afghanistan. The book, written by Jane Hampton Cook, Jocelyn Green, and John Croushorn, was published by God & Country Press, an imprint of AMG Publishers.

Shannon Van Roekel of Mission, British Columbia, Canada, had her first book, Desert Fire, a 304-page contemporary Christian novel, published by Kregel Publications in September. Her first historical fiction children’s book for middle-graders, Matthew’s Voyage, is being released by Avyx Publishing in July 2010.

Lebanon’s Nancey West, who published Miracles Among Us: A Look Inside the Lebanon Soup Kitchen in 2008, was among five finalists in the General Religious category of the National Best Books 2009 awards sponsored by USA Book News.
